SUNDAY
04/24/99 - Pro Street

SUNDAY: Okay, this is going to be brief. We didn't wake up until about 10:00AM and then we had to get all our stuff together and check out. At about noon we rolled into the contest site as the street riders were nearing the end of their practice rounds. We hung out for about two hours and just saw the beginning of the street runs. As nice as the course was it didn't seem like anyone was really going big during the first rounds that we saw. Lots of transfers... no big gaps or HUGE flips or anything.

Perhaps it is the X-Games being only a few weeks away that is hindering the performance of the BEST riders out there.  Apparently Rob Noli went off and scored the win.   Nice to hear his name on top of the charts again.  I don't think I've seen him win a big event for a few years.

We took off at about 2:00PM and headed back to the east coast. Ten hours (and ONE speeding ticket) later I pulled into the garage. Exhausted, sunburned, sweaty, thirsty... PSYCHED. If riding is fun then contests are fun times ten. There is just something cool about seeing so many riders that are good in one place. To look across a street course and see Nyquist hit a huge backflip as Harrington hits a one-handed 540 tailtap and Mirra goes for some huge transfer. It is almost surreal to watch as Farris, Brown, Meyer, and Degroot all warm up at the same time hitting tricks that you don't even come up with while dreaming. To then go out and ride with them... to be part of the sport. It is great. ESPN security needs to just let riders ride and maybe figure out what the definition of FLAT LAND is... not bumpy kind of sloped land. But the crowd is there and psyched, the riders are there and incredible... and I was there having fun.... AWESOME.
