RUNS
About two minutes to show time and it looks like I am
actually able to connect here live. For those who are following
along with the game, welcome! Not being one to offer much in the way
of updates recently, we'll see how many people show up. This will be
a REGULAR occurrence for the next few days as the Games go down. Once
again the scene is setup indoors with virtually the identical setup as
last year. A roll into a four pack on one side into a SECOND roll-in
where the riders turn around and bolt into a 6 pack. Not sure where
they will start from - looks like the 6 pack to the four pack. Geez!
Have they started already? I may be missing some stuff as I work on
this damn Internet connection. Oh well. I will get in tune in
time for finals (hopefully). Mark Kehl just went through
his first run and I totally missed it. But a 79.60 was the score
good work me. A baker is up a tailwhip to x up on the
second with a double truck on the third jump. Pulled clean, but not
really pushing it high. Second run through up and x to 360 turndown
to x-up - nice. Clean, but nothing super fancy or new for the
crowd... a very quiet crowd. 86.00 - Much improved over Mark. Next
up C. Bohan - man big lookdown loop and a double no-footed can-can. Next
set up it's a one -handed x-up and then a big indian air. A good
run, maybe a little bigger than Adam in the last round or so I
though... 82.60. I wish they would use first names here - I
don't know any dirt jumpers. R. Noirot? Drops to a
one handed superman to wow, nothing done on the next two jumps, a serious
screwup on his part. Now a one-hander then a BIG 360 whip to - oh
shit! Hard bail and limping away, hope he is alright. The
score for him is a 69.40 fourth. How many runs will they be
doing for dirt qualifiers? Well, hopefully you all like to read
because there is a lot more to go I would think... Let's
see who's next hmmm... Foster - No footed can to a 360 and the a 360
turndown on the last set. He just flows. Now a big turndown
transfer and a HUGE 360. Wow, that was some originality in an
otherwise mundane setup of jumps. Good to see someone pushing
it. Into first place with an 87.40 I'm trying to keep
the placing list in order as we go, but this isn't exactly a spreadsheet -
just HTML. Sorry if things look screwy, but the scores are right. Riding
for Huffy we have ummm.... wait. No? Yes, Tim (Fuzzy)
Hall who goes down then changed his mind. Weird. Okay, now he
may be ready... or not? So exciting. ;o) Here we
go! 360 then 360 can-can and then a nice barspin. Not really
pushing it. Second set a one handed flattie and a flattie on the
last set. We shall see. A 78.20 will probably not be enough to
get him into the finals. Another couple of runs may help though! Kris
Bennett is up next. 23 years old from Philly. A local boy is
getting the crowd going. No hander then a 360 x-up now a 360 x-up
the opposite direction. Sweet! He has some great flow through
the jumps. Second set is a turndown then a nothing to a
turndown. Wow, that was fun to watch. A good run. Color
him first with an 87.80 - wow. Up next we have Colin Mackay
from Greenville, NC. Another 23 year old. 6 feet tall...
damn. no footer to turndown then a tailwhip to x-up and a big
360. A x-up the other way then a big double truck driver. The
big boys are all getting ready to flow through their lines right now and
the level is definitely going up. 3rd place, well deserved.
Someone come type for me please? Alright, a few seconds of
a break and we will now have Paul Kintner. 22 Years old out of Salem
Oregon. 170 pounds... why do they give us this info? A 360
lookback then a 360 x-up now a 360 the opposite way. Do dirt jumpers
have something against grinding I don't see any pegs? A big transfer
turndown to a double lookback on the last set. Judges liked that a
lot. 87.40 Cory Nastazio comes up next. Ever
heard of him? They are listing his sponsors so I think we have some
time to breathe. Unlike everyone else - he has no stats...
wait. 24, 5'11" 160 pounds Riverside, CA - now go stalk
him. He's just chillin' on the top of the ramp - boom 360 2nd bar
spin then a nice whip. Second run, x-up now a big one handed x-up
backflip (yes that was one trick). He goes kind of big. That
wraps up the first ten and the next ten are doing a quick chain session to
reacquaint themselves with the jumps. Next rider comin' at
ya is Scott Wirch who hits a big 360 then a huge nothing a finally a nice
whip. The second set holds a loop then a big 360 turndown. His
stuff is just so big it is hard to describe. I think you would enjoy
this most just sitting at the base of the dirt jumps looking up at
it.... So why aren't you here? These events are free!
82.60? If the judges say so, he went way bigger then some of the
other guys... but I'm not judging so whatever. Anyone
have some Advil? I'm getting a headache sitting here listening to
the crap music they are playing. Okay, here comes Todd
Walkowiak. No hander old school to a bar spin to a no footer (same
jump) then a nice barspin. Not bad for the 2 year old from PA.
A nice turndown and 360 x-up finish things off for his first run.
The seventh place spot is his for right now. Not bad... but
probably not enough with Nyquist coming up and some other VERY big
guns. (Lavin?) Chris Gerber is up next, another rider
I've never heard of in my flatland world. Warsaw Indiana and 20
years old an x-up to a 360 on jump 2 to a barspin on the last one.
Not much... This boy is good but not enough. a X-up to
turndown and a nice tailwhip. But, the tailwhip was it. A
single big trick won't be enough for him to make it onto the podium
here... maybe not even enough to make it to the finals.
Definitely not with a 11th place 78.00. Gotta step it up here. People
should keep in mind when you see the second place guy pissed off that if
he did slightly better he would have WON about $5,000.00 more and Stephen
McCann is our next rider. Big name? Maybe not, but
soon... 360 barspin and a double barspin with a grab in the
middle. Damn... missed a trick. I'll type faster. A hugh
loop to a big no-hander over the last set. You gotta be psyched when
you are placed ahead of Nastazio after your first run though. No
promises with more runs coming up. Wow, this is taking a
long time! Allan Cooke is about to blow everyone
away... Okay, that's just a guess but he's kind of good I would
say. 20 years old and 160 pounds. Small guy with mad
skills. The green of Mt. Dew and a huge loop turndown to a whip and
then a big 360. He's throwing so much more in though... A BIG
flip barspin and then a fully extended superman seatgrab. That was
one of the first and biggest that we shall see tonite. ON TOP OF THE
SCORING... Good guess me. :o) The difference
between watching really, REALLY good riders and just the really good
riders is so obvious it is amazing. It's not just one trick, it's
every trick done just a little bit higher, a little bit further and with a
little bit more style. It flattens you with how they are just
obviously better than the others in the run. Of course,
they put Allan, Chris, Ryan, and TJ all back-to-back. Chris
Doyle: x-up 360 tailwhip - biff! WHAT? That was
BIFF!!! A slam on the whip landing. Color him last
place. I'm sure he's bummed. With two more runs (this story
will be WAY long!) he has a chance to recover. But, I think that
they take the top two runs, so he will have to hit it all perfect from
here on out. Mike Parenti is up next. An X-Games
newcomer he has to be happy just to be here. But does he have the
stuff he needs? He rolls down the starting ramp flip x-up and a 360
finally a whip on the third set. Second setup hughe flip and a nice
superman seat grab coming down a little bit short but still pulling it
clean enough to ride away. He should do pretty well... Ninth
place? I thought a little better... but okay. Three
riders are left on top of the hill - all of them were medalists from last
year - any guesses? TJ Lavin is the first one to come
up. Riding his red Specialized (quality?) bike. Whatever the
case, he already has 2 gold medals from X-Games and he wants more.
Las Vegas living 25 year old 160 pound kid. Loop to a barspin and a
xup (same air) and a tailwhip on the last set. Is he getting
old? Second set, BIG superman seat grab and a one-handed no-footed
can-can. No, he's not getting old, he's just warming up. 85.80
for the first run. I'm glad I'm not a judge cuz' I've got no idea
how they keep track of 20 riders and three runs. So, it's
time for Ryan to make his jab for the Gold medal. A definite
favorite after winning the HSA title for the year. 23 years old from
Greenville NC. 5'6" - A midget? Who let the midget
in. (Just kidding I'm only 5'8" - and I can't flip... or
360) The crowd actually made a little bit of noise, let's see how he
starts... A fan holds up a Nyquist poster that ESPN provided to them
(what?). Whatever. A loop barspin a rocket air barspin then a
360 one-handed x-up (I think). Whoa! Nice backflip... to
manual? In dirt? Not intentional! But pulled then a
final barspin to finish it all off. Disappointment. Yet STILL
he's in first. Wow. For those who may wish to
complain because I miss the first trick on the second set of jumps it's
because they have some stupid 'X' hanging from the ceiling right in my
point of view. Nothing I can do about it, but I am trying to catch
the trick up on the Jumbotron. Maybe I see it... maybe I
don't. Stephen Murray is the last rider up. A billion
sponsors long and another double backflip in his pocket? We shall
see. Only 22 years old from Riverside, CA. He's all set and
drops down the starting ramp. Boom! Loop to turndown 360 and a
nice nothing on the last jump. Big, but it looks like warm-up to
him, not the real stuff. Back in to a backflip turndown and a 360 at
the end to finish off his first set. You know he is going to
qualify, but how high will his score be and will he be good enough to take
down Nyquist who has his mind set on Gold and ONLY Gold. Not enough
from the first qualifying run with a 84.60. SECOND
RUNS The first 20 are in line and they
are giving me 60 seconds to actually think... Hopefully I will get a
little more time then that. If you are going to be looking for some
pictures I will be trying to get about 20 pictures up in the PHOTO
GALLERY in about 30 minutes after the event is over. There is
some formatting and stuff that I need to do to get them and BMXTRIX
photographer (Pieter Possenier) has to get himself up here before it will
all be possible to even begin. Keep your fingers crossed on some
good photos today. But, there will definitely be some good stuff
coming this weekend! The goal is to choose about 20-40 photos PER
DAY - PER EVENT to show. Well, let me do Mark
Kehl justice on his second run since I was so bad about missing his run
the first time through (sucks to go first man!). Should I go get a
drink instead? No, I will go AFTER his run... Things are so
slow here trying to get runs started. Backflip x-up, barspin to x-up
and a nice 360. A setup air on the second set first jump then HOLY
SHIT!!! SEVEN TWO OH - Perfect 720 on the biggest set in the house.
Wow! Wonder what he did in his first run? Damn. Kick ass
Mark! An 87.40 averages out to move him up to 13th place. Much
improved!!! One more like that and he'll be in the finals I'm sure. Backflip
and a HUGE 360 whip on the second jump. Recovery air and a setup on
the second set to a ... tailwhip. Not much that will
move him up for Adam Baker. It was really nice, but it didn't all
flow together throughout. Maybe the one big trick is enough. C.
Bohan is up again with a loop and a 360 flatty then a 360 flattie the
other way - slides out! What? He's down for now, but back up
to the top of the second roll-in. Two roll ins, isn't that
special? Big backflip then a barspin to a no-footer on the final
jump. He went down though, not a good thing to do in ANY contest -
especially here. No footer then a bailout right away from
R. Noirot. What is his name anyway? Why don't they put it
up? He's from France so that might help explain my ignorance.
Sigh. Not good though - He stays in 19th place with no scores really
good enough to move him into the finals. Think he will stop
competing now? HA! Just kidding, Im' sure he's just happy to
have this chance once in his life. Brian Foster is coming
in again. Giving me just a second... a 360 flattie then a no-footer
turndown and a big lookback. Geez... I think. A flattie then a
nice 360 turndown. He's got some mad flowage, but his tricks aren't
nearly as big as some of the other guys. We shall see what the
judges say. He drops only one place to the #5 spot and looks set to
make the finals. Fuzzy is up again and I'm sure he's
looking to improve a big 3650 and then... well a 360 barspin on the last
set. But nothing in between isn't good here. A big 360 and a
one handed, one footed flattie on the last set. He simply doesn't
have the tricks to propel him into the finals with the top riders. 17th
place is where he remains. Kris is up again with a
nice no-phander and a nothing on the second then a 360 lookdown on the
last of the first 6 pack in the series. He works his way to the top
(slowly?). Last set, a turndwond and a nice no-hander one-footer to
a turndown on the last set. Big and smooth with old-school no-handers
a cool to see. He holds onto the third place spot and it looks like
he will make it to the finals unless some people really step things up
below him. Not likely. Colin Mackay went through the
stuff... No wait, the signs were weird. Okay. Colin hits
a hugh loop then a no-footed can-can with serious tweakage. Then a
no-handed 360 to finish off the first 3. Second set a turndown and a
nice x-up to turndown 360 (one trick). Okay, some skills are
definitely present here! Tied for third he has definitely stepped
things up. I need a list of the order these guys ride
in.. Okay, Paul is up again, I can remember THAT name... Why
haven't I heard of some of these guys and what's with the funky lights
here in the arena? Ah well, a 360 x-up starts then a 360 on the
second set to a 360 the other way. No feeble, no manual, just
air! A BIG 360 and finally a superman x-up. I don't think it's
enough, but that superman x-up was definitely cool. That run drops
him down one spot. Just a little more variety then big 360's I think
are required. Learn from Ryan (barspin) Nyquist! Nastazio
is up again and I would say he is looking to improve a little from
#9. The announcer tries to get the crowd amped as Cory looks bored
up on the starting deck. Gotta get amped for this type of event and
I'm not sure he is. A minute later (commercial break?) the announcer
tries again, and Cory still looks bored. What's up with that?
Okay, he drops in and starts with a loop x-up and then ... blech,
finally a 360 turndown on the last set. That no-trick air in between
will hurt. A big flip and a huge superman seatgrab (you've seen the
pictures right?) on the last set. It's big, but with five jumps
available and tricks done on only four, it won't do much to help his
overall score. Not a damn thing as he stays in 9th place. Like
I said, gotta step it up here. Scott just dropped without
an intro to screw me up and he threw down some nice 360 variations in a
couple of tricks. Second set... Huge flip x-up and a 360
barspin to no-footer (yes one trick) that was really big. That
was a really good set it looked like. That moves him up to
12th spot, a big jump, especially with one more jump to go. Todd
does an x-up and a 360 x-up one direction to a 360 x-up the other
direction. Smooth. Second set is a x-up to x-upt the other way
and a truck driver on the last set. Todd's stuff is just not as big
as the other guys... but maybe a little more tech. Enough tech that
he moved up a spot! Number 11 (tie) Gerber does a
nice loop to an x-up on the second set and a tailwhip on the third.
Barely threw that x-up on the second, but better than nothing. A
no-hander to x-up and finally a superman on the final jump. Gerber
really put some good stuff together, but not as much style as the big guns
I would say. Not enough to change his position overall with that
score. Lame. ESPN tries to make this as boring as possible
I think. Slow and lots of time between riders. I need a nap. 360
to a no-hander to a x-up and then a double barspin on the next set.
McCann can really throw down some nice tricks. How often can I say
that? Second set of jumps, a flip no-hander and a little bit off on
the landing means no last jump. Definitely a fuck up for the
score. Wow, a drop from 7th to 15th... That's gotta
hurt! He has room to make it up though. Allan Cooke
is up again and in second place he has to do incredible to get ahead of
Nyquist who may be paying off judges... I doubt it though with the
variety, height and skill he is throwing down you jealous fools. But
a one-footed x-up flip and a nothing to seatgrab to follow with a nice 360
at the end. Second set, a x-up setup to a no-footed can-can
nothing. BOOM! (here comes the) - That was interesting to say
the least. His average sits at 89.00 and his position doesn't
move. I would say that he is going to make the finals... what do you
think? Doyle has a chance to really make up for his first
run - a 360 x-u then the tailwhip and a turndown 360. Clean
and big - just like we expect from Chris. Second set, a turndown and
a final double truck to finish things off. I think this may help his
score some... oh, just a little. 89.00 moves him up 1 (one?)
spot. His final run should be clean and put him in the finals I
would expect. Parenti is up again with a loop x-up and a
barspin to x-up the other way then a suicide 360 to finsih off the first
set of jumps. A loop x-up and adouble truck to dirt - that is eating
dirt. Ouch. He didn't go down that hard but over rotated the
double truck. HOW is that even possible. Mad skills, we will
see him again. He drops one spot to 15. Next up is TJ
who everyone seems to like by the appluase. A 360 one hader lookback
and a barspin then a truck driver over the last set. Second run
through brings us a nice 360 x-up and finally a huge superman no-hander
(nothing). That was much better than his first run I would say and
may move him up some. Up 2 spots to number 5. He definitely
deserved that with much more flow. Ryan is up again and the
judges are feeling broke with no payoffs. A huge one handed x-up
loop and a big no-footed can-can now a double truck driver. A quick
setup into the seoncd set and a hugh loop to a 360 barspin to
wipeout. That'll bring him down some... maybe a lot. A
guess... okay - 85 or 84 as the score anything higher and the judges have
fatter pockets then they like to admit. 80.20 brings his average
down to 85.90 and SEVENTH place. Yes, his first run was that good,
yes his second run was that bad. Ouch. The last run
of the second round is about to drop and Stephen is looking very seriously
at the jumps. 10th place puts him on the edge of qualifying after
gold last year. A screw up could put him out for good. He
drops and a no-handed flip to a x-up no-footer and a x-up 360 on the last
set to a long climb up the second ramp. He drops again and hits a
loop to a 360 on the last set. This doesn't look like the same guy
who won last year. Hopefully he's just teasing us and is going to
haul off on the last set of runs for the night. He stays where he is
in 10th spot and is about to lose his qualifying if others step things up
some. THIRD
RUNS If you don't know this is the set of
runs where guys who fell early on in competition will make HUGE leaps from
10th to 5th or for Chris probably a jump from #19 to about #8 or
better. He has the skills and he will improve. If he does it
then Murray will be out of the finals... Think about it. In
the break there is a gunshot on the floor... No wait, one of the
riders just blew out a tube. Man, that has GOT to suck. Go fix
it, make it all better, then ride again at the end - if they let you. Mark
is on top of the roll-in and heads down for his 3rd and final run.
He blew me away before and a nice 460 x to a no-hander to x-up and then a
no-footed can-can to x-up. He likes them don't he? Second set
is a huge loop no-hander then a 360 lookback. He gets some
props from the sidelines and heads on out as the judges tally the
score. Tied for fourth he is IN - if the others don't want it
more. A big jump from 13th though. Adam hits a nice
invert but then blows a 360 tailwhip. He needed that
desperately... He walks away clean, but his run is over. He
stays in the 10 spot, but that won't last for long with that run dumped. Nice
loop then a barspin and a decade on the last set - to some serious dirt in
the mouth. That may have hurt but he is walking up the second
roll-in to finish off his run. Two roll ins really help some of
these guys. Second set is a huge loop then a nice tailwhip to finish
it all off. That may move him up some but maybe not
enough. He shouldn't have fallen on that decade tailwhip... thing he
tried. 80.10... doesn't really help. Foster drops for
his final run - 360 and a 360 flattie to a 360 turndown on the last
set. Back to back to back 360's won't do it though. Another
360 then a no-footed can-can to turndown. He is an incredible rider,
and an 87.40 moves him up to #4, he will definitely be in the finals
unless something weird happens here. Fuzzy hits a 360 then
a 360 can-can to a x-up on the final jump. Not his biggest set
ever. Second run is a big 360 and he finishes it off with a 720 that
he leans back to far on and loops out. He's alright but Tim is
probably not in the finals this year. He stays in the #17 spot. Kris
drops and a no hander to turndown thea 360 x-up and a 360 the other way
start things off. He heads up the second hill and looks down at the
jumps drying his hands... He hists a setup and finally a no-footed
seat grab to no-footed can-can. He will be in the finals for
sure. Tied for 2nd place - no-change. Mackay drops
and starts with a loop then a 360 toa HUGE bail. Damn would be
what I would be saying... over and over again. He is heading back up
the second starting hill, but it won't help. A turndown and a big
superman seat grab. A great way to finish it off. He didn't
need it though. This low score will be dropped as he is almost
definitely in the finals. For those from BMX Board -
WELCOME and thanks for coming. We will be doing this for every
indoor event as often as possible and the outdoor stuff I will be doing
then uploading immediately after the runs are over. Paul is
up with a 360 x-up to a 360 then another 360. Kintenr is copying
Foster I would say and he won't do NEARLY as well I bet. Okay, a 360
lookback and a crazy ass superman to nut landing. He didn't die, but
it won't be a super score I would bet. Yeah, 78.60 is his low score
for the event and he stays in the 7 spot. Not to bad, but I would
worry for sure. What's up with Foster doing 5 360's and getting an
87 then Paul does 5 and gets a 78.... hmmm... Crack would be
my guess. (ah well, I guess they try). Nastazio drops
again for the last time, a loop to begin thhen nothing on the second (not
a nothing, just nothing). A superman on the last set and up to the
top of the second roll in. He comes back in and hits a x-up then a
huge, huge, huge whip 360 to a slideout at the end. A little dirt
will not help him do better. 77.60 - guess what! We will throw
THAT score out won't we. Next up we have Scott Wirch who is
trying desperately to make the finals. From 13 he won't do it unless
he scores a really good run. He looks down with some concern on his
face... he drops. A 360 flattie to a nothing to no-footed can
(one air) and a tailwhip finish off the first set. Second set
consists of a loop no-hander and a very solid 360 barspin. Big, big,
big - he is really happy and he should score well with that run.
Qualify??? He moves up to EIGHTH place and has a chance to stay in
the top ten!!! Word. Next up: Todd who hits a nice
flip to a tailwhip and a 360 x-up on the first jumps. Next
set: A turndown and a x-up rocket. It was good, but not enough
I am betting. No better than his first run... he's out. I
breathe for a moment before Chris Gerber drops in... A loop
to begin and a setup air to a good whip... but not that big.
He comes down on the other side and immediately blasts a setup air
and.... arggghhhh!!! a dead sailor. Chris is done with
only a 73.00 - judges are getting harsh here at the end. Watch
out here comes the last run for McCann who hits a 360 one hander then a
barspin to x-up and a 360 xup on the last set. I try not to be too
repetitive but they like that trick! A 360 and a tailwhip finish
things off... Steven is not finished off for the Games with a score
that moves him up into tenth... can he hold it though? Seven
riders left to go and some people are definitely in the finals including
Allan Cooke... But Ryan in sitting on thin ice in 9th place and
Murray OUT??? Gotta step it up! Allan drops for a fun
run which he will probably go at balls out. A flip then a nothing
and a whip on the last set. Damn is he good. He drops the
other side and starts with a turndown and a truckdriver to a
no-footer. Whatever - he's already in, so let's put some icing on
that cake eh? His position won't change, but his score could go up
even more. He looks to the board and smiles as the score of 87.60
comes up, he remains solidly in first and his smile gets only bigger. Doyle...
the bomb is about to jump well out of the nineteenth position here I would
bet. Like to #6 or maybe even better... but first his
run. 360 to a 360 x-up the a 360 barspin. Solid, solid,
solid. Just what he needs. Second set of jumps begins with a
big turndown then a turndown 360. Not his best stuff for sure, but
way beyond solid. He is moving WAY up.... SECOND PLACE FROM
NINETEEN!!! Big, big, big I say. Parenti goes down
hard on his second jump and it's over for him for the day. Well out
of the finals buy he had fun. TJ drops for the last time
and hits a nice 360 another 360 and a 360 barspin to x-up.
Cool. Second set, he drops, a x-up and there is the whip 36 OHHHH.....
hard, he goes down really, really, REALLY hard. He is helped to his
feet, and walks away. Not pretty though. He will stick with
his other scores. Nyquist and Murray left - one of them may
NOT be going to be in the finals!!! He doesn't need perfection, but
Ryan needs to do well if he wants to move up. Under pressure Ryan drops
and hits the lop then a no-footed can and a truckdriver on the first set
of jumps. He goes to the top and looks down quick - a barspin and a
anice no-footed can-can nothing. That was it, color Ryan back in the
top scorers for the day... first place though? Probably not. A
score of 85.60 moves him into second. He is smiling like a
hyena. Kickass. One rider left and last years X-Games
gold medalist does not look good to make the finals unless he can throw
down a huge run. The pressure is really on Stephen and he is
fidgeting as he looks down the ramp and puts his hand to his helmet in
thought. This is not the way it's supposed to work for the X-Games
gold medalist from the prior year. But, it's not 2001, it's 2002 and
the riding is insane. He drops... A loop x-up to a 360
turndown to a big 360 x-up on the last set. Very smooth, very
big. He drops, a loop no-hander to turndown (same air!) and a 360
x-up. It is not enough though, he simply brought the gold to late
for it to help him into the finals... no double flip attempt even
and not enough glory early on to push him into the finals... heartbreak at
#11. That wraps up this years preliminary coverage for dirt
2002 at the X-Games. Hopefully my coverage and typing isn't to
piss-poor for you all to enjoy. There will be some photos up by
about 9:45PM tonite (the 15th) after some really quick editing - check
back soon! ~P~ RED
