Trevor Meyer Interview

If there is anyone in the world of riding that deserves props for consistency, motivation, and just pushing the sport further you would think Trevor is the one who would get it.  Unfortunately he began in the sport with a style that was a photocopy of Chase Gouin...  This caused a ton of people to give up on Trevor and start dissin' him and hating him forever.  But to those who actually talk to him they will see that he is one of the people that truly ride from the heart.  He left Chase's style in a memory and now does more original tricks in a contest run then most people ever are able to dream up.  His turbined death trucks are absolutely incredible and his consistency in contests is unparalleled.  I remember competing against him in his first pro event in Moreno Valley, CA a few years ago.  It was the beginning of what has been a great career for him.  He is one of the few flatland riders that has really 'made' it in the sport... if that is even possible.  Perhaps the good ol' Minnesota boy may not present the HARDCORE image that a ton of riders demand.  But whether you are 12 and have only ridden for a week or are a veteran pro Trevor will want to ride with you....   For him it really is all about riding.

~P~ Start with the basics: Name, age, where are you from

T. My name is Trevor Meyer, I'm from Minesota, and I'm... twenty... um... hold am I? 28 no 27 yeah. (laughs) I just turned 27.

~P~ How long have you been riding now?

T. About 14 years.

~P~ You're bringing home the gold... AGAIN. What do you think about your current situation?

T. Oh you know- It's going good. Doing a lot of shows with GT and it's nice to add another first to the collection.

~P~ Who do you ride with?

T. Ummm, yeah, now and then. I lived in Tuscon, Arizona for the winter and I rode with this guy Johnny Lopez (?) Loper? He's like old school... You know, I'll ride with anybody really- even skateboarders I'll hang out and ride with a lot. There's really just not that many riders in Minnesota so I'll pretty much just ride with whoever.

~P~ You seem to have a real "LET'S RIDE" attitude to everyone. Do you ever have riding slumps and what do you do to get out of them?

T. I'm totally down with having a good time riding. I don't care if someone is a beginner or whatnot... It's all about having a good time riding.

~P~ Everyone knows that your bike is set up huge. Just how tall are you?

T. I'm 6 feet 2 inches. It's always been the way I've had it. Even back in the 80's I raised my stem up super high and it always just works for me.

~P~ Any favorite tricks?

T. I really like that death truck turbine that I was able to pull today.

~P~ Oh man, you pulled that out of your ass today (really on edge). What were you thinking?

T. I just thought- HEY! I've got twelve seconds and it just all worked out perfect. I've got some other turbine stuff that I really like doing also.

~P~ You're going to all the B3 events this year... are you going to go to the Worlds?

T. I don't know. I might. I'm not that concerned about that contest really. Even though it's called the worlds. I mean the money isn't half as much as these contests. I'm not saying that I'm in it for the money- but it is nice to have. But, I really don't like contests. I gotta go to them though. I mean if I didn't go to a contest I think I would really be slacking.

~P~ Where do you think flatland is heading?

T. Hopefully it will get into the Olympics someday. It's good to see that it's in the X-Games and wasn't dropped or anything. Hopefully it will just keep getting bigger and bigger.

~P~ What do you think of ESPN's coverage of flatland?

T. Well with Kip announcing and explaining the tricks he's doing a pretty good job. It's not to bad- I'm happy with it.

~P~ What's the worst injury you've had?

T. Last year at the X-Games I broke my thumb. That was the worst injury I guess. I also sprained my ankle once too, that was pretty bad.

~P~ Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Mr. Pibb?

T. Ahhh... I'll say Dr. Pepper- even though I don't drink soda anymore.

~P~ Oh, what do you drink?

(rider in background) JUST BUDWEISER?

T. (laughs) Umm, every once in a while. Mostly just water, orange juice. Healthy stuff.

~P~ What kind of music do you listen to?

T. I like Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, and a bunch of classic stuff.

~P~ What do you do to train besides ride?

T. I try to work out every other day. I started lifting weights about a year ago and I just totally enjoy it. It's something that I like to do. When I'm at hotels I go swimming or whatever.

~P~ How much dedication does it take to get where you are today.

T. You definitely have to love what you are doing and keep going with it- enjoying it. I don't know. You just gotta stick with it. It's something I've always liked to do and I just want to keep riding. If you don't like it you probably would drop out right away.

~P~ What kind of bike do you ride?

T. I ride a Dyno Slammer. I'm on a 1999 model which I've had for a couple of months now.

~P~ Do you like it?

T. Yeah, yeah, I really like it! New design and the down tube bend gives the extra scuffing space which is totally cool.

~P~ What do you have to say to people just getting into the sport?

T. Well try not to get discouraged and just stick with it. Eventually you will start to pull the tricks that you are working on? You know it takes tons of time so don't drop out. If you like doing it then eventually you'll get good at it.

~P~ On you on tour again this Summer?

T. Yeah, I'll be out this year a lot of Midwest stuff this year for me.

~P~ Any last words or people you want to thank?

T. I'd like to thank GT, Dyno, JNCO clothing, ACS Tires, SST Oryg, and my Power Bar sponsor.

~P~ Great thanks a lot- take it easy!
